WP 1: Experimental material and characterization

Beneficiaries: KIT-INE, CIEMAT, HZDR, CTH and MSU.
WP leader: Dr. Thomas Rabung (KIT-INE)

  1. Organizing new samples of fracture crystalline rock drill-cores from the Äspö URL, sampled and handled under anoxic conditions,
  2. Ensuring access to experimental samples of previous studies, as required,
  3. Characterizing the experimental material with respect to chemical / mineralogical composition and properties from a nm resolution scale up to bulk properties, including structure and properties of the accessible fluid system (porosity, hydraulic conductivity, diffusion exchange kinetics between different compartments, …), especially the new material, but also existing material, as required,
  4. Characterizing the experimental material with respect to natural chemical homologue behavior, and
  5. Documenting the outcome of characterization in view of interpretation of subsequent radionuclide transport experiments and modelling (including interpretation of natural chemical homologue data, characterization of the accessible fluid system, bulk hydraulic properties, etc.).

Provision of new fracture bearing drill core samples obtained, handled, transported and stored under anoxic conditions, including first documentation.

Characterization of experimental material by different techniques (Krypton BET, Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy/ Laser-Induced Fluorescence Spectroscopy)
